UAF condemns vicious racist attacks on Muslim students at City University
Unite Against Fascism is deeply disturbed to hear news reports of a vicious racist mob attack on Muslim students at City University in north London.
According to reports, a gang of 30 youths ambushed the students outside the university on Thursday evening, armed with metal poles, bricks and sticks. Two students and a passer-by who tried to intervene suffered stab wounds in the attack. Three men aged 17, 18 and 19 have been arrested so far.
The stabbings on Thursday night are the latest in a series of racist attacks on Asian students in the area, according to the Federation of Student Islamic Societies. Reports say an attack earlier in the week ended with at least one student being hospitalised with severe head injuries. The gang shouting Islamophobic and racist abuse at them, including "get those Muslims" and "paki".
Weyman Bennett, joint secretary of Unite Against Fascism, said: "We warned that the rise of the BNP would lead to more racist attacks on the streets. Putting Nick Griffin on Question Time has given succour to every racist thug in the country.
"Now we see Asians getting set upon and stabbed by gangs spouting hatred against Muslims. We urgently need to unite all communities to stand together, reject this racist poison and drive out the fascist BNP."
