BNP talk of "racial foreigners" reveals hardcore racism at the heart of the party

The British National Party likes to tell journalists it is a "legitimate" political party that has put its Nazi past behind it. But the latest comments from BNP leader Nick Griffin have revealed the hardcore racist ideology that still lies at the organisation's core.

In an interview today with BBC Radio 4, Griffin dismissed the notion that Black or Asian people could be British as a "politically correct fiction".

He was defending the BNP's "Language and Concepts Discipline Manual" which tells the party's activists that Black and Asian Britons "do not exist" and should be referred to as "racial foreigners". The BNP manual also states that the organisation's "ultimate aim" is the "repatriation of the resident foreigners of the UK".

Ken Livingstone, chair of the Unite Against Fascism campaign, said:

"The BNP claims to be a normal political party. In fact they are racist thugs in suits. Their leader's description of Black and Asian British people as 'racial foreigners' and his talk of 'bloodless genocide' shows they now feel they can be more open about their racist and neo-Nazi policies to exploit people's fears about the economy.

"We know from history that once the Nazis got a taste of power they showed their true colours. The BNP are modern British Nazis. That is why people should vote to stop the BNP from winning any seats in the European elections on 4 June."

Lee Jasper from the National Assembly Against Racism said:

"Despite recent attempts to prettify its image, the BNP remains a criminal conspiracy against Britain's Black, Asian, ethnic minority and immigrant communities. The BNP is a fascist and racist organisation.

"We must never forget where the politics of hatred can lead to. This month marks the tenth anniversary of the London nail-bombs. Former BNP member David Copeland bombed Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho, killing three and injuring many others. All decent people must register to vote by 16 May and use their vote in the European elections on 4 June."

Weyman Bennett, joint national secretary of Unite Against Fascism, said:

"We've always said that the BNP was a racist, fascist party. But you don't have to take it from us: the party's own manual spells out its commitment to an all-white Britain. The 'repatriation' it calls for means mass ethnic cleansing. That could not be achieved except through brutally violent means.

"Nick Griffin says that the very presence of black and Asian people in Britain amounts to 'a sort of bloodless genocide'. This comes from a man with a criminal conviction for denying the existence of the Nazi Holocaust.

"Griffin's talk of 'racial foreigners' and 'repatriation' is aimed at building on a wider climate of racism against immigrants, Muslims and other minorities. He wants to whip up that racism and take it one step further. If politicians are serious about taking on the BNP, they have to stop pandering to that racism.

"It's vitally important for everyone who is repelled by these comments to get out and vote on Thursday 4 June - and to vote against the BNP."
