BNP stand record number of candidates in local elections
According to information received so far the BNP is standing in 365 candidates across Britain compared to 334 in the previous local elections. The BNP local election campaign 2006 sees a small change in regional focus from 2004, with an increased number of candidates in West Yorkshire, the West Midlands and London and fewer standing in the North East.
Following previous high votes, the BNP is standing candidates in many more wards in Bradford, Kirklees, Thurrock and Barking & Dagenham. Other areas with more BNP candidates include Birmingham, Leeds, Coventry, Southend and for the first time Hastings.
The BNP's decision to stand in all 40 wards in Birmingham and 23 wards in Leeds indicates that the BNP is trying to stir up racism and build support in areas where they currently have limited support, in a long-term bid to build a base, which is necessary for their prospects in the next European Parliament elections. The BNP came very close to gaining European Parliament seats in 2004 in Yorkshire and the Midlands.
