Demonstrate against the BNP’s court appearance in London: Friday 12 March

The court case examining the BNP's membership rules will reconvene on Friday 12 March. The judge is due to decide whether or not the BNP has made sufficient changes its "whites only" membership rules or whether the rules are still racist.

Whatever the results of this case, the BNP remains a fundamentally racist and fascist organisation dedicated to the elimination of black and Asian people from this country.

Unite Against Fascism will be protesting on Friday from 11am onwards outside the court. Come and join us! Central London County Court, 13-14 Park Crescent, London W1B 1HT. Nearest tubes are Regent Street and Great Portland Street, or click here for a map.

Stop the EDL in Bolton on 20 March

>>> DOWNLOAD LEAFLET HERE

Protest against the EDL
Saturday 20 March, 11am
Victoria Square, Bolton

The racist hooligans of the English Defence League have rescheduled their plans to descend on Bolton for Saturday 20 March. Unite Against Fascism has called a national counter demonstration for all those who want to defend our multiracial society against the EDL's thuggery and violence.

North West UAF has launched a Bolton Unity Statement condemning the EDL and calling on people to support and attend the demonstration against the racists in Bolton on 20 March. Signatories include MPs, trade unionists and campaigners such as Bolton MP Ruth Kelly and Manchester MPs John Leech, Tony Lloyd and Gerald Kaufman (click here to read statement).

The EDL had threatened to come to Bolton on 6 March this year. An EDL spokesperson interviewed in the Lancashire Telegraph refused to rule out violence and confirmed that the openly Nazi thugs from Combat 18 were regulars on EDL demos. But this demo was cancelled when the EDL realised its thugs would go on the rampage against a Hindu festival in Bolton planned that day.

Unite Against Fascism believes the EDL should not be allowed to terrorise ethnic minorities in Bolton or anywhere else. Join our demonstration to show these racists and fascists that they are not welcome in the town. Meet 11am on Saturday 20 March at Victoria Square in Bolton.

Emergency protest against the EDL in London this Friday

Assemble 11am, Friday 5 March
Houses of Parliament, London

The English Defence League (EDL) will be marching in London on Friday 5 March in support of the far right Dutch MP Geert Wilders who is visiting the House of Lords to whip up hatred against Muslims.

The EDL pretends to be a 'peaceful' group opposed to 'Muslim extremism'. In reality it is nothing of the sort. It is a gang of racist thugs and hooligans with links to the Nazi BNP.

EDL thugs spread fear and terror when they rampaged through Luton and Stoke recently. They smashed cars, attacked shops, chanted "BNP! BNP!" and assaulted Asians. When some locals tried to stop them they were called 'race traitors' and attacked.

The EDL should not be allowed to march through London. Join the Unite Against Fascism protest to show these racists and fascists that they are not welcome here. Meet Friday 5 March at 11am outside the Houses of Parliament.

Media workers set up campaign to Expose the BNP: launch rally Tuesday 23 February

Expose the BNP: Tuesday 23 February, 7pm
Amnesty International Human Rights Action Centre
17-25 New Inn Yard, London EC2A 3EA

BNP thugs recently ejected a Times reporter from a meeting in Essex because they didn't like what the paper had written about their party.

The incident revealed the methods the BNP will use to stop its activities being reported on. The BNP cites "free speech" to demand access to the mainstream media - yet its actions reveal that it is an enemy of free speech.

This is just one reason why UAF welcomes the launch of Expose the BNP, a new campaign by media workers to exposing the truth about the BNP – that they are a party of racists and fascists.

Expose aims to support media workers who stand up to the BNP and campaign for the fascists to be tackled forcefully on the occasions when they are afforded airtime or column inches.

The campaign is backed by the executives of the NUJ and Bectu media workers unions. Its launch rally is on Tuesday 23 February in London and features speakers including Yasmin Alibhai-Brown of the Independent, Mehdi Hasan of the New Statesman, Sunny Hundal from Liberal Conspiracy, Peter Hain MP, Michelle Stanistreet (NUJ), Pat Styles (Bectu) and Weyman Bennett from UAF.

Stop the BNP in 2010
Saturday 13 February, 9:30am to 5:30pm

This Saturday will see hundreds of people from around the country gathering at the TUC Congress Centre in central London to attend a crucial conference to oppose the British National Party and other fascist organisations.

The event will address issues such as blocking the attempts of BNP leader Nick Griffin to take a Westminster seat in Barking, stopping the BNP around the country at the local elections, tackling the rise of anti-Muslim race hate groups such as the English Defence League, and the role of music and the arts in the fight against fascism and racism.

Unite Against Fascism has led the campaign against the BNP in the past year, from delivering millions of leaflets at the last elections to organising high profile demonstrations against the BNP and the EDL.

This conference will be a chance to meet the people on the front line of the battle against the BNP in coming months and beyond. It will also see the launch of a series of Love Music Hate Racism festivals to be held across the country in the run-up to the elections.

Keep Durham University fascist-free: protest on Friday 12 February against the Nazi BNP

Unite Against Fascism has called a demonstration on Friday 12 February to oppose the disgraceful decision by Durham University's debating society to invite two leading BNP Nazis on to its premises.

Andrew Brons and his sidekick Chris Beverley will be given an officially sanctioned platform at the university to launch an attack on our multicultural society. They will be "debating" whether black and Asian people belong in this country, speaking alongside two Tories.

The debating society has tried to justify its invitation by talk of "freedom of speech". But it is under no obligation to give the BNP a platform to spread lies and race hatred. It has chosen to roll out the red carpet to a pair of Nazis.

By doing so it has sent a signal to every racist, fascist and bigot in the country that they are welcome at Durham University campus and that their hate-filled views are considered "legitimate".

It has also sent a signal to every black and Asian person that their very physical presence in this country is considered a suitable matter for "debate" with Nazis.

Andrew Brons is a lifelong Nazi with a long history of inciting hatred against minorities. He joined the National Socialist Movement, an openly pro-Hitler organisation, in the 1960s. Its street thugs were responsible for a wave of arson attacks on Jewish property and synagogues.

Brons later joined the National Front (NF), a party that incited violent attacks on African Caribbean, Irish and Asian people. In 1981 he led a rally in Fulham chanting, "If they're black, send them back." In October 1983 he led a group of his thugs through the streets of Leeds chanting "white power" and "death to the Jews".

Chris Beverley is a BNP councillor in Leeds and is responsible for the party's links with the NPD, Germany's leading neo-Nazi party. He was a speaker at the European National Front conference in February 2007, a network that brings together Europe's most vicious racist and fascist organisations.

Unite Against Fascism is calling on the university authorities to repudiate this invitation and reaffirm their commitment to a multiracial and multicultural Durham University where ethnic minorities can work and study in an environment free of race hate. UAF supporters will demonstrate outside the debating chamber on Friday 12 February, assembling at 6pm, Palace Green, Durham.

Stop the English Defence League in Bolton

Protest against the EDL
Saturday 6 March, 11am
Victoria Square, Bolton

The English Defence League (EDL) – a group of racist thugs and football hooligans with links to the Nazi BNP – will be marching on Bolton on Saturday 6 March to whip up race hatred against Muslims.

These thugs spread fear and terror when they rampaged through Stoke-on-Trent last month. They smashed cars, attacked shops and assaulted Asians. Some locals tried to stop them – but they were called "race traitors" by the EDL and attacked.

Don't believe the EDL's lies when it claims to be a "peaceful" group opposed to "Muslim extremism". It is nothing of the sort. The EDL is a group of violent bigots that wants to intimidate and attack all ethnic minorities – and anyone who opposes their race hate agenda.

An EDL spokesperson recently interviewed in the Lancashire Telegraph refused to rule out violence from his supporters and confirmed that the openly Nazi thugs from Combat 18 were regulars on EDL demos.

The EDL should not be allowed to march in Bolton. Join the demonstration called by Bolton UAF to show these racists and fascists that they are not welcome in the town. Meet 11am on Saturday 6 March at Victoria Square in Bolton.

UAF to mark Holocaust Memorial Day with campaign against the Nazi BNP in Barking

Unite Against Fascism supporters will be assembling in Barking, east London, this Sunday 24 January to mark Holocaust Memorial Day which takes place on Wednesday next week.

Campaigners will be leafleting homes in the constituency to warn people of the BNP's Nazi politics and build the campaign against BNP leader Nick Griffin, who plans to stand as an MP in the area.

The BNP poses as a legitimate and democratic party, but in reality it is a fascist organisation in the tradition of Hitler's Nazis. The party was founded by open Hitler admirer John Tyndall. Its current leader Griffin has a criminal conviction for incitement to racial hatred for publishing a magazine that tried to deny the Holocaust took place.

Click here to watch a video of Griffin denying the Holocaust in 1997. Griffin now likes to claim he has put his Nazi past behind him - but this is just a pose. He is appearing next month as guest of honour at a US neo-Nazi conference organised by American Renaissance.

To join the UAF day of action meet at 12 noon on Sunday 24 January, outside Dagenham Heathway tube station. For more information contact Barking & Dagenham UAF on bardagunite@gmail.com or call 07946 850967.

Stopping the Nazis in 2010: come to UAF’s national conference on Saturday 13 February

UAF national conference 2010
Saturday 13 February, 9.30am to 5pm
TUC Congress Centre, London WC1B 3LS

Speakers include: Ken Livingstone, Margaret Hodge MP, Dawn Butler MP, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown (journalist), Michael Rosen (writer and broadcaster), Kay Carberry (TUC), Billy Hayes (CWU), Christine Blower (NUT), Jerry Bartlett (NASUWT), Steve Hart (Unite), Hugh Lanning (PCS), Wes Streeting (NUS), Edie Friedman (Jewish Council for Racial Equality), Dr Abdul Bari (Muslim Council of Britain), Daf Adley (NUS LGBT officer), Weyman Bennett (UAF & Anti Nazi League), Sabby Dhalu (UAF & National Assembly Against Racism), Martin Smith (Love Music Hate Racism), Riz Ahmed (actor and MC), Jerry Dammers (The Specials), Itch (King Blues), Kid British... and many more

Unite Against Fascism is holding its annual national conference on Saturday 13 February at the TUC Congress Centre in central London.

This will be a crucial event for everyone who opposes the fascist British National Party and wants to prevent it from making gains at the next general and local elections. It will also be a focus for all those resisting the rise of racist anti-Muslim groups such as the English Defence League.

The climate of racism against immigrants and Muslims, together with harsh and uncertain economic circumstances, have created conditions that have allowed the Nazis to grow.

The BNP has been steadily building support over the past few years, culminating them gaining two MEP seats at the last European elections. Now BNP leader Nick Griffin intends to stand for parliament in Barking, a constituency where the fascists already have 11 councillors.

But the BNP has not gone unopposed. In the past year Unite Against Fascism has organised dozens of high-profile protests, rallies and campaigns against the Nazis. We helped disrupt Griffin's press conference, blockade the BNP's annual rally in Derbyshire, and most recently organised a huge protest outside the BBC studios when Griffin appeared on Question Time.

UAF groups around the country have also regularly opposed the EDL in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

The next six months will be vital for turning the tide against the fascists. UAF stands for uniting everyone who wants to fight back against the BNP and EDL - black and white, gay and straight, people of all religions and none.

If we stand together we we can defeat the Nazis just as we defeated the National Front in the 1970s and the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s. Come along to our conference and find out how you can join the momement.

Register now! Fees are £25 for organisation delegates, £10 for individuals, or £5 for unwaged/students. Make cheques payable to Unite Against Fascism, or use our secure online donation facility at www.tinyurl.com/UAFdonate and write "Conference Registration" in the comment box. Stop the racists in Harrow this Sunday

Anti-fascists from across London are set to come to Harrow this Sunday to defend the local mosque from racists for the second time this year.

A group called "Stop the Islamisation of Europe" - which brands all Muslims in Britain as "extremists" - is planning to march on Harrow Central Mosque on Sunday 13 December.

This group, together with the racist thugs of the English Defence League, tried to march on Harrow mosque on 11 September this year. But they were blocked by a magnificent turnout of 2,000 anti-fascists who defended the mosque and prevented the racists from getting near it.

Nevertheless there is no room for complacency. Despite being consistently outnumbered by anti-fascists, the EDL have been getting more aggressive at their anti-Muslim demonstrations.

Last Saturday in Nottingham they attempted to break through police lines and attack the UAF demo. UAF activists in Leicester and Hull received threatening phone calls from the EDL in the run-up to the Nottingham demo.

We need a similar show of solidarity this Sunday to show the racists that they are not wanted in multicultural Harrow. Assemble 12 noon, Sunday 13 December, on the pavement outside Harrow Civic Centre, opposite the mosque on Station Road (nearest tube: Harrow & Wealdstone).

Anti-fascist protests set for Glasgow and Wigan this Saturday 14 November

Unite Against Fascism is supporting two anti-fascist counter demonstrations taking place this Saturday 14 November.

In Glasgow, UAF is backing the Scotland United protest against the "Scottish Defence League", the Scottish offshoot of the English Defence League group of anti-Muslim racists, hooligans and Nazis. The Scotland United demo assembles at 12 noon on Glasgow Green.

We have also heard that the Nazi BNP is holding its annual conference in Hindley Green, near Wigan, this weekend. UAF has called an emergency protest against the BNP: meet at 12 noon outside The Swan pub on Swan Lane, Hindley Green, Wigan WN2.

There will also be a counter demonstration against the EDL in Nottingham in a couple of weeks' time. The current plan is to meet at 10am, Saturday 5 December, in Market Square, though these details may change nearer the time. For info send an email to unlaw@hotmail.co.uk.

Protest against the EDL in Nottingham and the Scottish Defence League in Glasgow

The racist hooligans of the English Defence League – and its Scottish affiliate – are planning more of their anti-Muslim "protests" in Nottingham on Saturday 5 December and Glasgow on Saturday 14 November.

Nobody should be fooled by the attempts of the EDL and SDL to pretend they are not racists. Video footage and photos of their demonstrations show EDL supporters chanting disgusting racist slogans and making Nazi "seig heil" salutes. These "peaceful" protesters responded to this evidence by sending death threats to the journalists involved.

In Glasgow, UAF is backing the Scotland United anti-SDL demonstration, which has the backing of the Scottish TUC, the Scottish-Islamic Foundation and a host of other trade unions and civil society organisations. The demo assembles at 12 noon, Saturday 14 November, on Glasgow Green.

Nottingham UAF has called a counter demonstration against the EDL. The current plan is to meet at 10am, Saturday 5 December, in Market Square, though these details may change nearer the time. For more information send an email to unlaw@hotmail.co.uk

Celebrate and defend multicultural Leeds this Saturday: protest against the racist EDL

Assemble 12 noon, Saturday 31 October
Leeds Art Gallery, The Headrow, Leeds LS1 3AA

Anti-racists, politicians, faith leaders, trade unions and community leaders and have signed the statement opposing the EDL marching in Leeds and calling for unity to celebrate and defend multicultural Leeds. The statement reads:

"We the undersigned strongly oppose plans by the 'English Defence League' - a group linked to the fascist BNP - to demonstrate in Leeds city centre.

"The EDL is a racist group dedicated to attacking Asian people and Muslims. Islamophobia - bigotry against Muslims - is as unacceptable as any other form of racism. Its aim is to divide us by making scapegoats of one community, just as the Nazis did with the Jews in the 1930s.

"Today they threaten the mosque, tomorrow it could be a synagogue, temple or church. Today they threaten Muslims, tomorrow it could be Jewish people, Hindus, Sikhs, black people, lesbians & gay men, travellers or Eastern Europeans.

"There is no place for Nazis, racists or the BNP in Leeds multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious community. We call on the Home Secretary and the police to ban the EDL action. We also urge people to attend the peaceful 'Celebrate and defend multicultural Leeds' rally to be held outside the Art Gallery on Saturday 31st October at midday."

Organisations backing the statement include Yorkshire & Humberside TUC, Yorkshire & Humberside UCU, Leeds TUC and Yorkshire & Humberside UAF.

Signatories of the statement include: Fabian Hamilton MP, Cllr Richard Brett (leader, Leeds City Council), Bill Adams (regional secretary, Yorkshire & Humber TUC), Sue Dorsey (president, Leeds Jewish Representative Council), Rt Revd John Packer (Bishop of Ripon & Leeds), Paul Clays (regional secretary, CWU), Tim Roache (regional secretary, GMB), Ian Stephenson (regional secretary, NUT), John Campbell (chair, Yorkshire & Humber UAF), Cllr Arif Hussain, Cllr Josephine Jarosz, Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, Cllr Adam Ogilvie, Asghar Khan (prospective councillor), Zubeda Arshad (Armley Mosque), Revd Ashley Hardingham (minister, Chapel Allerton Baptist Church), Gill Goodswen (vice-president, NUT), Tony Stanley (Leeds Racial Equality Council), Mick Hooson (NAPO, West Yorkshire branch chair), Keith Allen (actor), Tony Walsh (PCS negotiations officer), Patrick Murphy (Leeds NUT secretary), Prof Malcolm Povey (president, Leeds University UCU) Andy Brammer (Wakefield TUC secretary), Brian Mulvey (Leeds City Council Unison branch secretary), Bill Chard (GMB regional organiser), Sally Kincaid (NUT Wakefield & District divisional secretary), Ken Cridland (secretary, Lancashire NUT), Ian Murch (NUT national treasurer and Bradford divisional secretary), Alex Kenny (NUT national executive member), Andy Lee (central secretary, CWU Leeds #1 branch) and many others.

Unite Against Fascism at London Pride: Fascist National Front humiliated

The National Front's counter demonstration at London Pride on 30 June was the first time a fascist group has counter demonstrated against Pride in many years. Five forlorn fascists held placards and a banner which included an attack on lesbian and gay marriage rights. They were met by thousands of marchers, revellers and activists who held up Unite Against Fascism's placards based on the pink triangle design that Hitler's Nazis used to identify gay men, which was turned into an anti-fascist statement. We would like to thank all those who helped us make this year's London Pride have a strong anti-fascist message, especially the Black and Muslim communities, trade unionists and local community groups that plastered their floats with our placards.

York UAF respond to the BNP's threat to stand at local elections

Unite Against Fascism supporters have been out leafleting in the Haxby Road & Groves areas of York over the last two weekends in response to the BNP's threat to stand at local elections. The elections aren't due until 2007, but following the Nazis' attempts to stir up hatred against homeless people in neighbouring Clifton, local anti-fascists are determined to prevent the BNP making inroads into the city. The anti-fascist campaign has been boosted by strong condemnations of the BNP by the new Archbishop of York John Sentam, councillors of all parties, and the local paper.

Here is a piece from the local paper - it was on the front page.

Here is an additional news item on the BNP from the paper.
